Under section 65 of the Local Government
(Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, the district council may fix
the rates or fares within the district - namely all charges
distance or otherwise, in connection with the hire of a Hackney
Carriage vehicle (taxi).
Although the council can “fix” the fares, it is not the
duty of the council to state what the fares should be. A report to
Cabinet will present the findings from recent consultations
undertaken with the taxi trade for which the trade seek to
increases all fares by 25%.
The recommendation to Cabinet will be to fix the fares as requested
prior to public consultation, and to further delegate authorisation
to relevant Officers and Members to regularly review and change the
fares in the future when required.
